Lawyers in Las Vegas, Nevada

Experienced Representation in Matters Involving Spousal Support/Alimony

If you are considering filing for divorce or are already a party to a divorce proceeding, you may be uncertain whether alimony/spousal support is necessary or even possible and, if so, how the amount will be determined and whether it will be a permanent award or merely in place until specific conditions, such as job training, are met. You want an experienced attorney to protect your interests, one who knows how alimony is determined, one who has successfully protected the rights of men and women in spousal support proceedings.

At the offices of Larry C. Johns and Laura L. Johns, we have helped men and women throughout southern Nevada resolve alimony and spousal support differences since 1968. Our attorneys take a straightforward and honest approach, making certain you fully understand the law, the process, your rights and your responsibilities at all times. We place a high priority on personal service and attention, making certain that all your issues are handled by a lawyer. We work closely with you to seek and promote cooperative solutions that save everyone time and expense.

Our Spousal Support and Alimony Counsel

We work with individuals in support and alimony disputes, helping you determine whether a grant of spousal support is warranted and, if so, the terms of the alimony award, including amount, frequency and duration. We will carefully review the factors that the court takes into consideration, such as age and health of the parties, earning capacity, length of the marriage and presence of children.

We work with clients in situations involving:

  • Temporary alimony. Often, alimony will be granted while the divorce is still pending. However, if you demonstrate the ability to pay the alimony during the divorce process, you may then be required to show why you shouldn't keep paying it once the divorce is final.
  • Rehabilitative alimony. Alimony is frequently granted for a limited period of time, in order to allow a non-working spouse to develop a skill set to reenter the workforce. This type of alimony generally lasts two to five years, though the length will be determined by looking at such factors as age, experience and ability to work.
  • Permanent alimony. A permanent grant of alimony is rare in today's world, customarily ordered only in situations involving lengthy marriages where one spouse has not worked in a long time and would have great difficulty reentering the job market.
